E3 2011: Uncharted 3 Tries to Drag Drake to the Bottom of the Ocean
Naughty Dog's new demo got Nathan Drake all wet.
Sony knew they had to start the press conference strong, and so it makes sense that they kicked off their E3 press conference with Uncharted 3 with a demo that literally turned the game on its head.
The press conference demo showed off a cruise ship level, the ship getting battered by a vicious storm, huge swells making the ship sway back and forth. Naughty Dog is clearly showing off their level design in full force this show. Drake stumbles and grabbed onto things as the huge ship rocked, the entire level completely unsteady. He moved inside the ship, under massive chandeliers, then back out, shielding himself against the rain that battered the walkways.
But that was nothing compared to what happened when he got down into the hull of the ship… and threw an active grenade. Of course the ship's hull just freaking busts open, and water comes gushing in (so if you thought drake might be smarter this time around, whoops!). The entire ship, the entire level, tilted as water filled the cargo hull. Drake fought off enemies, avoiding cargo that slide and crashed around him.
And then the whole goddamn ship just tilted over on it's side.
So then it became Poseidon Adventure the game. Drake swam through the water, trying to escape the rising levels. He moved through tunnels, nearly got crushed under a vent, and eventually managed to bust out into a dry part of the ship. Drake only got a brief respite, and then the doors busted open and a wall of water rushed towards our hero. Demo over.
