Three Afghan military officers who sought refuge in Canada after skipping out on a military training exercise in Massachusetts say they were fleeing Taliban violence but now face the wrath of their own government as well. In interviews today inside the federal detention centre outside Buffalo, N.Y., where they are being held, the three said they fear they would be killed or imprisoned and tortured if they are returned to Afghanistan.

Child-molestation charges have been dismissed for the second time against a city man who has been deemed incompetent to stand trial. In Lowell District Court Tuesday, Nicholas Alemesis, 22, of Lowell, was ordered to spend 20 days at the Worcester Recovery Center.

In the fall of 1969, Queen City Bookstore, one of America's first comic book shops, opened in Buffalo. The three generation family owned and operated business is the city's oldest running bookstore and its owner Emil Novak would surely bleed comic book ink if you cut him.

The mayor of a Los Angeles suburb was shot to death Tuesday during an argument with his wife, who was taken into custody, authorities said. Paramedics were called to a Bell Gardens condominium shortly after 2:30 p.m. Crespo and his wife, 43-year-old Levette Crespo, had gotten into an argument, Hernandez said.

A cluster of 100-foot-tall grain silos in Buffalo is being turned into the world's largest six-pack. Crews are installing rolls of vinyl wrap spelling out Labatt Blue on six silos at the former GLF grain mill operation near the city's Lake Erie waterfront, home to several long-defunct grain elevators.
