Presenting a strong rsum, setting long-term goals, navigating social media and networking are essential skills for today's business professional - and all are topics for this year's Smart Business Practices seminar series, hosted by the University at Buffalo School of Management Alumni Association . The four-part series, "Enhance Your Professional Identity," will kick off Oct. 1 with a session on rsum writing and cover letter preparation and will continue on Dec. 10, Feb. 4 and June 3. Each seminar begins at 7:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast and runs until 9:30 a.m. at the Center for Tomorrow on UB's North Campus.

A 30-year-old man is in custody after authorities say he barricaded himself inside his western New York home during a domestic dispute with his wife. State police say Erie County 911 dispatchers received the call around 10:30 a.m. Monday from a home in the rural town of Boston, south of Buffalo.

Joseph Allen Hogan , 46, of Bank Street, Batavia, is charged with four counts of petit larceny and five counts of falsifying business records. Hogan is accused of altering weight slips at Ed Arnold Scrap in order to receive overpayment on scrap.

The University at Buffalo has hit a record enrollment for the second consecutive fall - though it bested last year's number by a mere handful. UB Provost Charles Zukoski said a total of 29,945 students are enrolled at UB this fall.
