Gov. Andrew Cuomo says state and local officials anticipate a four- to five-day workload cleaning up after a "historic event" that has dumped up to 6 feet of snow in some areas around Buffalo and will likely bring a couple more feet before it ends. At a briefing in suburban Cheektowaga Wednesday afternoon, Cuomo said hundreds of pieces of heavy equipment were being brought in from around New York and neighboring states, as well as hundreds of personnel.

Cuomo said everyone who had been trapped in passenger cars snowbound on the Thruway has been removed, but some commercial truckers have chosen to stay with their vehicles until they can drive away.

Service was suspended Tuesday because of the heavy snowfall and travel bans issued by local officials in Erie County, which has Amtrak stations in Buffalo and suburban Depew. Amtrak says service between the Albany area and Buffalo-Niagara Falls, Toronto and Cleveland, Ohio, is suspended at least through Wednesday.
